About the post
Teach Biology at Forms 3–5 (Grades 9–11), preparing students for the CXC CSEC Biology examination and building the foundation for CAPE Biology and study in the health sciences, agriculture and environmental fields. Teaching and learning - Plan and deliver the full CSEC Biology syllabus: Living Organisms and the Environment; Life Processes (nutrition, respiration, transport, excretion, movement, growth); Continuity and Variation (reproduction, genetics, inheritance); and Disease and its Impact on Humans. - Prepare schemes of work and lesson plans aligned to the CXC syllabus and the Ministry of Education's curriculum guides, sequenced so the syllabus is completed with adequate revision time before the May/June examination. - Teach through practical work wherever possible: microscopy, dissection, food tests, enzyme and osmosis experiments, ecological sampling on the school grounds and in the local environment. - Use a range of approaches — demonstrations, inquiry-based investigations, models, diagrams and ICT where available — to build conceptual understanding and scientific literacy. - Differentiate instruction so every student can access the content while stretching the most able. School-Based Assessment (SBA) - Plan and supervise the CSEC Biology SBA programme: laboratory and field investigations that develop and assess the skills of Observation/Recording/Reporting, Manipulation/Measurement, Drawing, Planning and Design, and Analysis and Interpretation. - Maintain each student's SBA record book, mark against the CXC mark schemes, moderate internally, and submit marks and samples to CXC by the published deadlines. Laboratory management and safety - Maintain the biology laboratory: prepare materials and specimens, manage stock of reagents and equipment, and keep an inventory. - Enforce laboratory safety rules and the safe handling and disposal of biological material and chemicals. Assessment and examination preparation - Set, mark and return regular assignments, topic tests and mock examinations modelled on CSEC Papers 1, 2 and 3. - Track each student's progress, identify gaps early, and provide remedial or extension sessions (including after-school or holiday classes where needed). - Advise students and parents on examination readiness and on progression to CAPE Biology. Professional and departmental duties - Maintain accurate records of attendance, marks and syllabus coverage; provide term reports and grades on time. - Contribute to the Science Department: share resources, take part in moderation and departmental planning, and support science fairs, environmental clubs and field trips. - Keep up to date with CXC syllabus changes, examiner reports and subject pedagogy; attend Ministry, NCERD and CXC professional-development sessions. - Maintain classroom discipline and a safe, respectful learning environment consistent with the school's policies and the Ministry's code of conduct. Requirements (for the Requirements step) - Bachelor's degree in Biology, or a related science degree with Biology as a major (a Trained Teacher's Certificate from CPCE or a Diploma/Post-Graduate Diploma in Education is an advantage). - Experience teaching CSEC Biology, with a track record of examination results; CAPE Biology experience desirable. - Familiarity with the CXC Biology syllabus, SBA requirements and marking schemes. - Confident in laboratory practice, safety and the preparation of practical work. - Registered with, or eligible for registration by, the Teaching Service Commission. Desired skills (one per line) - CSEC Biology syllabus and SBA supervision - Laboratory preparation, management and safety - Practical and inquiry-based science teaching - Microscopy and dissection techniques - Field ecology and environmental sampling - Setting and marking CSEC-style examinations - Data-driven tracking of student progress - Differentiated instruction - Digital lesson delivery (Google Classroom / Microsoft Teams) - Clear communication with students and parents - Record keeping and timely reporting
